THE NORTH SHORE EXPERIENCE  Breathtaking Ontario landscapes from the shores of Lake Superior, a trip to see this beauty a must. The north shore is a bucket list necessity, with bountiful fishing, motorcycle riding, ancient pictographs, waterfalls, hikes, camp sites and iconic light houses. First on my list is the “Galapagos of the North,” a lonely lighthouse island with black volcanic beaches and wind-swept trees surrounded by a blue-green azure freshwater ocean. Some of these stunning seaside backdrops will surely be a good addition to your picture album. The Porphyry Island lighthouse, which was first used as an operational lighthouse…

HISTORIC RIVER IS AWASH IN TRADITION In this destination travel article, my father and I travel to one of my favourite parts of Canada, the east coast. My first Salmo Salar, (Atlantic Salmon) was landed on a dry fly up in remote Labrador, weighing in at 43 lbs!  I will never forget the colour of that fish, chrome painted with an impossibly perfect patina of lilac purple, to heavenly blue. Hard Water Haven A fisherman’s bounty and desire for adventure doesn’t come easy and ice fishing to remote lakes in the Northern Ontario back country take skill, patience and determination. Snow machines off loaded and running we heaved the hard water gear off the truck and onto the tow-sled. A good 40 minute or more ride into the…

My Colombian trips are always well planned, far flung adventures to the remote headwaters of the Orinoco. What once began as a casual conversation between friends somehow morphed into an expedition into the jungle in search of peacock bass in untouched waters. My fly fishing dreams came true as I hooked and landed some incredible fish. Great people, exotic fish, and a remote, wild setting – how can you ask for more? This trip began with handshakes and hugs at a small airfield outside Bogota with our pilots and fishing partners Juan, Hans, Daniel & Gregg. As we hauled our…

The walleye!  Whether it’s called pickerel, dore, or marble eyes, the hardy walleye is no doubt one of North America’s most sought after fish. Anyone looking for a battle on his or her tackle will be disappointed. To quote Lefty Kreh: “ No one ever got a heart attack fighting a walleye”.This “twilight feeder” has specially designed eyes that allow them to see well during low light. They feed effectively any time of the day, but they are most successful during twilight, when the prey is still active but their ability to see is significantly less. Fooling the walleye:  The…
