MANITOBA
Conditions are rapidly changing as we start south and head north. In the south we have open creeks and rivers with runs of suckers at full steam. Ice conditions are not stable so now is the smart time to wait for open water. Up north there is a ton of snow on the ground and ice conditions are still stable for the most part. For example an auger extension was still needed on Paint Lake last weekend. Heavy snow cover though, is restricting travel, especially with slush. Kayla Jorgensen headed up north with friends recently and laid a licking some monster burbot and lake trout. They made it all the way up to Kississing Lake which north of Flin Flon.

She also managed to land a number of Master Angler lake trout including this 36.5 inch brute. Congrats Kayla on some awesome Manitoba trophies!
NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO
It is transition time in this part of the world, with ice conditions unstable and rivers and creeks just starting to flow. While Jay Siemens waits for things to settle down around his hometown of Kenora, he is still busy creating some great adventure video, including one just released on his trip to Rankin Inlet for the wild and elusive Artic Char!

It won’t be long until the fishing season opens in the southern part of the province. The first legal day for all species is May 5th on the south, May 15th in the central part of the province and May 25th in the north.

It’s that Time of the year again. The ice has melted, and across Alberta, a variety of public stocked trout ponds will be stocked in April and May. The Alberta Provincial Stocking program supplies over 240 waterbodies with approximately 2.1 million hatchery-reared trout to provide additional recreation angling opportunities and reduce angling pressure on natural fish populations.
There will also be an estimated 27,246,041 walleye fry stocked in 14 lakes and reservoirs, and 5,810 walleye fingerlings stocked in additional lakes and reservoirs in April and May. Along with additional fishing opportunities, the Alberta stocking program adds an estimated $100 million annually to the provincial revenue through a variety of revenue streams and a wide variety of part-time and full-time employment.
The Bass Pro Shops Spring Fishing Classic was once again a huge success. At each location during the two-week event, there was a variety of seminars, tank demos, and industry experts available for conversation about electronics and fishing products. Anglers were restocking their tackle boxes with a variety of fishing gear for the new season. Tracker Marine was booked solid with boats being dewinterized and other needed repairs, so boats are ready for the season opener.
There are a few Alberta waterbodies and a wide variety of stocked waterbodies open to fishing during April, and with the weather staying nice, anglers will be fishing them. However, most anglers are waiting for the season opener.
